My Life in Bands

The recent musical meme, along with my trip to see Elton John have made me a bit nostalgic for the days when I used to see bands perform live quite often. A normal person may think back over their life and muse, "I've seen so many concerts, there is no way I could remember them all".

Alas, I am no normal person.

Somewhere along the line, I started to keep a journal of every band I saw. These pages, like in any journal, contain things that make me laugh and things that make me shake my head in shame, as in, "how could you?". I am a sucker for 'free' tickets and will go to just about any show as long as I can find alcohol when things get tough. There are also bands whose shows I totally do not remember.

So, here goes. The complete(ish) list of the bands I have seen perform live in my lifetime (not chronological; I'm not THAT organized). And commentary when it is warranted (and don't be alarmed if there are a ton of bands you have never heard of on this list; there are many Boston/Providence bands because that's where I've spent most of my time):

small factory (sigh, RIP)
Amazing Royal Crowns (double sigh, RIP)
Dambuilders (oh crap, do any bands stay together?)
Scarce (shoot me now; am I a curse that causes bands to implode?)

So, anyone I need to add in the next 26 years to rounds out my list and make my concert life complete?

Wow, you made me remember back on my concert going days as well. Who could possibly be able to forget seeing Jack 'The Swinger' Hanlon as a pimply faced teen in one of his first bands - Flower Gang. Oh and the first time I saw Johnny Maguire as The Phantom...thanks for making me think of songs sadly long forgotten.

Hey I saw TMBG with you in Providence! And did I also drag you to the Cliffs of Dooneen show with Counting Crows and Cracker? (the all-C band bill) Wow, what a good friend you are to go with me to see my ex beat on a drum. I think he's in real estate now in Cambridge.

Wowsers! Some serious concert-hopping going on! Very cool. I've seen a few of those. Have you taken the kiddos to any shows (besides the obvious Wiggles - or did you & hubby just go for the fun of it? :-) ? I haven't taken the kids to any yet (besides the Wiggles) and would like to - Violent Femmes would not be the best choice though, too much herb action going on ;-)

I am so impressed. No, I'm beyond impressed! And not only by the number, but by the great bands you saw.

Damn.

Wow. I know I could never remember them all, but I think I was at half these shows with you. Ahh... Dancing onstage at S.C.O.T.S. and throwing out fried chicken. And I recall seeing John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band with you at Providence College with Sharon-- front row while it rained on us. Living in the C-I-T-Y, baby.

Julie stole my comment! I am a two-handed concert-goer too (but one of the few I have seen is the Rolling Stones! That counts for more right?).

The one thing my sister says she will never forgive our mother for is not letting her go to a Beatles concert when she was 14 and a friend had a ticket for her. Mom thought it was too young.

Mom of three! You just reminded me that I have seen the Rolling Stones. And Fiona Apple. They both played at some VH1 thing I went to many years back. OMG, and is it possible that I forgot David Lee Roth? OMG, now THAT was a night.

Found you on "Breed 'em and Weep" - couldn't resist a peek. Is this how people meet on the internet?

I think you named, like, 30 of my favourite bands in college. And to think you saw R.E.M. too. Sigh...what I wouldn't give to have seen them in their heyday when Michael Stipe had fairly odd hair.
