The Bitch is Back

Last night, I saw Elton John in concert.

This was not exactly my first choice in concert outings, but, when a friend I never get to see anymore offered me a ticket, I thought, "Why not?" It isn't every day that I can see someone perform songs I enjoyed in fourth grade.

Frankly, I was shocked by how many of his songs I could name off the top of my head. And, I was worried only about Candle in the Wind, which would make me want to light myself on fire by leaping onto the lighters held high into the air.

I then found out that the tickets were: a) free! and b) 10th row center! Crap, I've NEVER sat 10th row center for ANYTHING. The closest to the stage I could ever get was at the front of the mosh pit at a Reverend Horton Heat show. And, even then, there was always the sweaty guy without a shirt on to deal with.

So, off I went to my first big arena show in about 100 years. We were a few minutes late due to too much wine drinking beforehand, but, no matter, since the first four songs were unrecognizable to me. I know that he has continued to put out a bunch of music since I was 9, I just haven't kept up.

By the way, did you know how important a cell phone is at a concert? People who could take photos with their phones were clicking away constantly. I did wonder why they kept doing this since Sir Elton performed every song sitting at the piano, so Song #2 and Song #10 will look pretty much the same in a photograph.

Then there is the interesting phenomenon called, "Let's call someone we know and let them hear the music!". Never mind that I clearly remember when my sister called me from a Prince show and all I heard was a bunch of feedback. I got caught up in the moment and dialed my husband, my sister and my mom to let them hear the show. Hey, Mrs Q, when your phone rang at 9:15 last night and all you heard was a mess of noise? That was Benny and the Jets! Did I mention I drank a lot of wine beforehand?

Sir Elton didn't do much jumping around, and he was the most conservative-looking fellow in a band full of Muppets. But hearing Crocodile Rock, Rocket Man and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road live was fun and sounded great.

And thankfully, there was no Candle in the Wind. My vision of hundreds of teary-eyed, middle-aged concert goers waving BIC lighters in the air was not realized. It wouldn't have happened this way anyway since lighters are 'out' as the light of choice.

Instead, during slow songs, the audience merely held up their cell phones so that a little square of light shone above their heads as they swayed to the music. Not exactly "candle in the wind" material, eh?

I would love to see him in concert. But probably 20 years ago. So I'll need a time machine. And how funny about the mobile phone thing... I noticed that last time I went to a concert and thought it was a riot!

Oh man, I saw him with Billy Joel in 94. I wasn't too jazzed about going, but like you, I got the tickets for free and they were really good seats. It turned out to be one of the best concerts I ever saw. I think he was a wee bit more nimble back then...he and Billy both did a fair amount of jumping, or at least, walking around.

The Rev got a new drummer to replace Scott Churilla who joined the self proclaimed greatest RnR band in the world - The Supersuckers. (From wikipedia) "Paul Simmons was a drummer in the Christian rock band PETRA from 2004 until their retirement in 2005." You know if a guy can play the Revs sinful tunes - somehow I have a hard time believing his heart was really into Christian rock.

They use cellphones now? How disappointing...

I have to agree with Blog Antagonist - a Billy Joel concert that a minor unimportant boyfriend took me to was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Really spectacular. Not a Dead show by any stretch of the imagination, but absolutely incredible in its own way.

OK-- your sore prego sister was lying down upstairs when you called, so Jamie got the call. At least he instantly knew what the song was (not like the times he's called me from Frank Black, the Pixies and maybe even the Rev and it took me ten minutes to figure out what song was warbling through the phone).

When I called you from Prince, I figured you were the only person who would quite "get" the emotional whallop of hearing 'I would Die 4 U' live. I was too busy opening weeping to call you during 'Purple Rain'... l-o-s-e-r.

At least this show beat your last free ticket to Dave Matthews!

Okay, this is going to be a quick post because I must drag out my old univ cds from the crawl space and indulge in some nostalgic music listening. The Reverend Horton Heat AND Frank Black AND the Pixies - I haven't even thought about those names since...well, since I birthed a couple a big headed babies.
Elton John and Billy Joel aren't really my style but I would go just for the 'brag factor.'

Yes, Sir Elton is just an old queen now. Not as exciting to watch as when he was sporting his Donald Duck suit or fuzzy eye glasses.

Please tell me he didn't sing "Can you feel the love tonight". I think I would have beaten myself with my cell phone.

I would imagine him to be good - such an old pro and all.

I went to a geezer show once - saw Jerry Lee Lewis during the 1996 Olympics - and could not believe that he totally brought the house down. He was amazing - and like 497 years old!

i used to see reverend horton heat in the early 90's. my old boyfriend's bad opened for them at slim's in san francisco in 91 0r 92, then coincidentally in 93 my next boyfriend was old friends with them + his company made their clothes + hats band merchandise, so we got to see all their shows when they were in town + party on their 1st bus. i met a lot of people like the butthole surfers + pixies. that was almost 15 yrs ago + i never see live shows anymore. did you see them back then or lately?

modmom, I'm jealous! Yes, most of the Rev's shows I saw were in the 90's---I think more toward the middle than 91-92. I've seen him many, many times but not since 2003 when he opened for the Sex Pistols. My ability to see live shows is way, way down too!
