Dear Barack Obama: Please Watch Your Back


I'm worried about Barack Obama.

I'm worried because I keep hearing about the angry crowds at McCain/Palin rallies who are yelling things like "traitor", "terrorist" and, unbelievably, "off with his head" when Obama's name is mentioned.

"Off with his head"?!?! Some people are really and truly nuts.

Really and truly nuts, and probably racist too.

There is no question in my mind that there is a scarily sizable chunk of the population that is appalled that a black man could become the next President. I heard an interview with one man who said that he "couldn't live in a country that had Obama as President".

Buh-bye, then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I am worried though. And, I'm disgusted that McCain and Palin have not come out stronger against people who chant such things at their rallies. Especially things like "off with his head" or "kill him". It's unconscionable.

If things keep going this route, I'm going to suggest that Obama contact Rome for some "divine" intervention.

Because, really, if something terrible were to happen to this man, I think another bit of my faith in humanity would go up in smoke.

I hate to say I agree with you. My mother and I had a conversation this weekend where she confided in me, in a hushed tone, that she was very worried that the right wing nut jobs would target Obama for assassination. And that the McCain/Palin machine seem to be stoking those fires. We're both Obama supporters and this scares us shitless.

I'm sorry to say I agree. There have always been fringe lunatics, but I think the McCain-Palin campaign has created a culture in which the nutjobs feel validated.

I am very, very frightened about the outcome of this election. I'm not sure I can live among people that I know voted for McCain-Palin. Or, God forbid, something tragic happens to Obama. After W was elected the second time, I had seriously lost faith in my fellow man. Maybe I can move us to Canada.

From my perch way the hell up north (but still south of Alaska -- thank heavens) it looks like McCain and Palin are grasping at straws because they know they've lost the moderate middle ground. All that are left are the fringe elements. Nothing smacks of desperation like stumping on the anti-abortion ticket.

Regardless I'm still not convinced Obama will win. His election rides upon the youth vote -- who are notoriously fickle about getting out to the polling stations. ESPECIALLY if they've got to line up. DOUBLE ESPECIALLY if they need to line up some place without cell coverage.

Anyway two days till Canada goes to the polls! I've only just realized the Marxist-Leninist party doesn't have a candidate in my riding. Now what will I do?

I am very disappointed in McCain for not putting a stop to this. He's fanning the flames (or allowing his VP pick and his campaign manager to do so) and then acting shocked, shocked!, that people would say such things. I really expect better from him.

hi! im a first time reader...thought i would poke around and see what other SAHM's are doing and found you!

i am a 110% Obama supporter. i think that it will make America look like crap if something were to happen to him. How would our allies view us then? i also give McCain kudos for defending Obama last week i believe it was, when that ignorant lady stood up IN FRONT of all those people and called Obama an Arab. McCain looked a bit peeved and i liked that. i wouldnt say the entire ticket is to blame for fanning the flames, more the Palin side (sorry! thats what i see!)...

that popemobile is looking better and better for him :-(

Ironically, I had a very interesting conversation this morning with my colleagues in the UK who have a very different view of US politics - which is very enlightening to me.

Long story short, the last time they visited Boston (2 week ago) the cab driver on the way back to the airport told them he believed Obama would win and would be assasinated within 6 months.

They found this comment to be horrifying, and sad, that our nation is still perceived as "the land of the free" as long as you look like the rich white guy. Extremist lurk everywhere, be it the McCain or Obama camp, and living on one of the "coasts" I just don't think we see is as much as other parts of the country. Sad Sigh!

in the past few days, McCain *has* come out against his supporters and the violent-tinged comments towards Obama.

he was booed for it.

meanwhile, Sarah Palin continued to stoke those fans of hatred. THAT is what truly scares me. it's almost as if she's being put forth as a candidate for the future - not for the present.

and not a candidate of the republican party, but of the right wing fringe was has shown a scary penchant for blowing up and shooting people who believe differently.

Obama is definitely the right choice in this election - but the next several years scare the hell out of me, but for entire different reasons than the last 8 did.

There have been attempts on almost every president's life--including W.'s when a guy tried to crash his plane into the White House--but the secret service will definitely have their work cut out for them this time around. Maybe the Obamabile isn't such a bad idea..

I understand exactly how you feel. It's obvious that many people have the same fears for Obama's safety. It's very sad that in this day and age we're still having to deal with the same old issues.

I guess it had to happen with him being the first black man to run for president, but it really is disappointing.

I was upset when McCain answered the obviously crazy older women, he was all (clearly I'm paraphrasing)"oh no, he's not one of those.."I'm not Arabic, but it was sickening to see it become an "ugly word"and have someone who is wanting to lead this country accept that.

I'm worried for Obama too.
The idea that people would vote for people like Palin scares me A LOT!
