Let's Just Call a Spade a Spade

Here is what happens when a (quasi) vegetarian raises meat-eating children:

We ordered take-out Chinese food last night. Belly ordered boneless spareribs ("the red-colored meat", as she calls it).

Jilly sat at the table, grabbed a rib and started to gnaw away at it.

After she swallowed, she looked at me surprised, "I didn't think I'd like this, but it's good!"

Then a moment later:

"Is this pig?"

I think she has a certain pragmatic charm.

I've never understood why we romanticize farm animals (even the most urban child knows the sounds made by barnyard animals) and then expect our kids to eat them up?; 9:48 PM

Kristi B said...: I love this! My 7 year old recently decided to become a vegetarian, my child who we call "the carnivore" because she loves meat. So I asked her---"does this mean you're going to give up bacon?" Oh, she says, do I have to give up bacon? And then she uses the example of her uncle who's a "vegetarian" but eats fish---can't bacon be her exception? Too funny!; 12:44 AM

Vered said...: Hi there… I found your blog via your comment on Sweetney and I just had to comment on this one. My kids eat meat, but have been recently quite preoccupied with WHAT exactly is the meat their eating. Whatever I serve, they want to know not just which animal it came from, but also which PART of the animal.

Frankly, I'd rather not think about that (isn't that why we call it "beef" and "pork" and "poultry" instead of the animal names?). So far, it hasn't caused them to stop eating meat, so we'll see how it goes.; 10:57 AM
